Wer sagt, was richtig ist und was falsch?
„Maze“ is the second single from Toby Whyle’s debut album. The song addresses the discrepancy between the constant urge for self-improvement and „letting yourself go“. It seems like a never-ending dilemma: living in the moment versus carefully planning everything.
Often, everyday life feels like being caught in a loop and navigating predefined tracks— merely out of habit, we accept things exactly as presented to us. At the same time, we’re constantly urging for self-optimisation. We strive to increase productivity and move forward rapidly to turn into the best versions of ourselves, to be finally rewarded with what we expect to be pure happiness and joy.
The relentless quest for who and where we could be is reinforced by a shimmering range of approaches and solutions. But isn’t this in-between state somehow condemned to knock us back to square one eventually? What are we supposed to hold on to? Who says what’s right and wrong and how we should feel? The song’s chorus loudly demands answers to these questions. In the end, however, similar to a maze, it might come down to finding the right path for yourself.

Predefined, cut ’n‘ dried
Nodding by default
Crack a smile, stay in line
And keep the volume low
Speakers chant in unison
News already old
Why break a sweat
All is fine you know
So we don’t bother to move the needle
And sit down at the set table
Give me a hint
I don’t know what to make of this
Surreal, is it fake?
A little clue wouldn’t go amiss
Show me how to behave
Should I be pleased?
Should I be afraid?
You say the same as everyday
Keep the pace
We give, they take
(They take)
(We give, they take)
Mesmerizing monologues
Calm and self-involved
Soaring thoughts
Drowned by drowsy dial tones
We’re taken in by
Bland wines with golden labels
Well here’s to you
Feels like all fool’s day
The whole year through
Give me a hint
I don’t know what to make of this
Surreal, is it fake?
A little clue wouldn’t go amiss
Show me how to behave
Should I be pleased?
Should I be afraid?
You say the same as everyday
Keep the pace
We give, they take
What do you want me to say?
We’re lost in a maze
What do you want me to say?
We’re lost in a maze
Tried to find a new delight
Tried to fill the void with a new light
Tried to find a new delight
Tried to fill the void with a new light
Give me a hint
I don’t know what to make of this
surreal, is it fake?
A little clue wouldn’t go amiss
show me how to behave
should I be pleased should I be afraid
you say the same as everyday
Keep the pace
We give, they take
What do you want me to say?
